Of all of the different types of car accidents, side-swipe accidents have one of the highest possibilities of serious injuries. When you hit a car from the front or behind, there’s a lot of metal protecting the passengers from the vehicle striking them. In side-swipe collisions, the amount of metal is much smaller and thinner, meaning the vehicle is more likely to crumble and give way. As a result, at higher speeds, these types of collisions cause a wide range of injuries with differing levels of severity.

A side-swipe accident is when two vehicles are driving next to each other (in the same direction) and they accidentally collide side-to-side when one (or both) swerves into the other’s lane. There are many reasons for this: failing to check blind spots when changing lanes, not paying attention, being distracted by cell phones, messing with the radio or GPS, and many other things. Merging lanes on highways are hotspots for sideswipe accidents simply because they push two lanes’ worth of traffic into one.
These accidents are particularly interesting in that at lower speeds they’re almost never dangerous, simply causing body damage to the vehicle. However, at higher speeds, a side-swipe accident could cause one or both cars to spin out of control, resulting in rolling over or even additional collisions with other traffic or roadside features like curbs, lights, and more. This is particularly true if these added collisions occur to the side of a vehicle, which as we’ve stated already, is much weaker than the rest of the vehicle.
Because side-swipe injuries can occur in so many different ways and for so many different reasons, the types of injuries they can cause will vary greatly as well. While some common car accident injuries are still found fairly frequently, some more severe and less-common injuries could result as well.
Some common side-swipe accident injuries can include:
