Corpus Christi car accident lawyers are seeing more and more cases involving distracted driving. April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and NHTSA has released nationwide survey data about how prevalent and dangerous this behavior is.
According to this latest survey, at any time during daylight hours, 660,000 drivers (over three times the population of Corpus Christi) are holding phones to their ears, and 1.18 million drivers are using either a hand held or hands free mobile device. According to a separate survey, most drivers (74%) support bans on hand held cell phone use, and nearly all (94%) support bans on texting while driving. However, almost half of drivers (48.6%) say they answer incoming phone calls, and more than half of those drivers (58%) admit to continuing to drive when they do answer a call.
Exactly how much distracted driving is a part of fatal car crashes or crashes that result in injury has proven difficult to determine. There is a lack of uniformity amongst the states in how distraction is reported by law enforcement and related agencies. However, the highway safety community is working to create uniform reporting guidelines for distracted driving. 2011 statistics show that of those currently reporting, 7% of drivers in fatal crashes were reported as distracted at the time of the crash, and 12% of those were using cell phones. 2011 data suggests nearly 1 in 6 (17%) of crashes resulting in injury involved distraction, resulting in 387,000 injured people.
Given how serious an issue distracted driving continues to be, what can we do to help reduce the danger? As drivers, we can turn off electronic devices before we drive, and wear our seatbelt to protect ourselves from others. As passengers, we can speak up if our driver is using a device. As parents, we can be a good role model, and talk to our teens about responsible driving. If we all pitch in, we can at least make ourselves and our families a little safer.
